Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. – August 28, 1963
"Not everyone can be famous but everyone can be great because greatness is defined by service." — Dr. King (1929-1968)
Like Dr. Martin Luther King before us, Launching Educational Assistance Programs Forward, Inc. (LEAP Forward, Inc.) also has a Dream. A dream for our youth. Our life's mission is to help and guide our youth, and our goal is to provide them Hope and Opportunity.
Not too long ago our youth could depend on "the Village" to help them navigate life’s journeys. Time present, we seem to have lost the "caring" and "reaching back" of times past. LEAP Forward, Inc. was formed to stand in the gap and provide educational services for underrepresented youth in need of a "Village." We are paying it forward.
Our primary drive in 2001 was to address the decline in our nation of youth pursuing math and science education and careers. As engineers who happen to be African Americans, we are intimately aware of the gap that exists for African Americans and women. Due to the scarcity of youth in the pipeline aspiring to enter the profession, we want to give back to our community by sharing our knowledge, opening the doors of opportunities, and introducing possibilities. The potential for youth to enter careers in math and science is limitless especially since society is becoming more technologically dependent and needs competent and talented professionals. We need a generation of diverse youth (from underrepresented ethnic and cultural backgrounds) who are prepared to accept the challenges to engineer a world that is a better place for all of us. Though STEM was our initial focus, over our years, our mission has expanded beyond STEM. We dream of creating a critical pipeline of diverse talent that is prepared to answer the call of this nation because they are provided hope and opportunities. By providing access to programs and services; Out of a Mountain of Despair, we will hew out a Stone of Hope.
We touch dreams... Don’t let the dream die.

July 23, 2023 Scholarship Program a big success. Fifty-seven scholarships awarded. |
In 1998, our Founder, Rhonda Thomas, saw a need to provide opportunities for youth to imagine a better future. Armed with hope, she arranged for area youth to travel to colleges and universities for college tours and financially supported our youth with college application fees, SAT/ACT exam fees, books and scholarships. As a public charity, established in 2001, Launching Educational Assistance Programs Forward (LEAP Forward, Inc.) as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization was birthed. Rhonda solicited the support of fellow engineers: Wilhemina, Conrad, Wilson, Maurice, Tim, Bobby and Burdette. They continue to help our youth pursue their educational dreams by providing hope and opportunities. LEAP Forward Inc. is named in memory of Mr. Wallace Lorenzo Leeper, an Outstanding and Dedicated Guidance Counselor who served at Calvert High School.
